Your machines already know when something is wrong. Edge AI lets them tell you.
Factories and buildings are full of sensors. They produce mountains of data. But more data does not mean more clarity. Often it means the opposite.
That was the starting point of Franz Inselkammer’s talk at TechEx Europe in Amsterdam on 19 October, in the Industrial AI and IoT track. His message: IoT should reduce complexity, not add to it.
Stop streaming. Start understanding.
A vibration sensor can produce 50,000 values per second. Send all of that to the cloud, and you get an answer seconds later.
With Edge AI, the sensor analyses the data itself and sends just one thing: the result. Action follows in milliseconds. It needs less bandwidth, keeps working offline, and raw data never leaves the site.
What Edge AI can sense
- It sees. An AI camera spots a surface defect at Station 04. No video is sent, just the finding.
- It hears. Machines speak before they fail. A change in a motor’s sound can point to a worn bearing.
- It feels. Vibration patterns reveal imbalance, misalignment and wear. A machine’s health score drops from 94% to 63% long before it stops.
- It notices presence. Radar knows if a room is empty, without a camera. Heating and lights switch to eco mode.
- It smells. Gas sensors in an electrical cabinet caught an overheating cable 18 minutes before there was any smoke.

Data needs context
One alert is helpful. Hundreds of alerts are noise. A Digital Twin puts every signal on a live map of your site. Click on Motor 17 and you see what is wrong (bearing wear), where it is (Line 2), how urgent it is (about 14 days to failure) and what to do (inspect it this week).

Then act
The last step closes the loop. A simple rule turns insight into action. Bearing score above 0.85? A work order goes to maintenance. Room empty for 15 minutes? The HVAC turns down. Every action creates new data, and the system keeps getting better.
The bottom line
You probably don’t need more data. You need to understand the data you already have. Edge AI and Digital Twins make that possible with the infrastructure you already own: less downtime, lower costs, faster decisions.
